Phyllis M. Cavens, MD, FAAP
Dr. Cavens, the founding mother of the Child and Adolescent Clinic in 1978, is now the Medical Director. After 38 years of being a pediatrician caring for children, she regretfully chose to retire from the active practice of pediatrics. She has been married since 1963 to her husband and fellow pediatrician, Travis Cavens, who is already retired from the Child and Adolescent Clinic. They met while they were medical students and were married after their sophomore year. They have two children, Derek and Sonja, who are grown. Derek is a writer, living in Montana. Sonja works at Legacy Hospital at Salmon Creek as an obstetrical nurse. She and her husband, Aaron Harman, have made Dr. Cavens a grandmother.
Dr. Cavens is a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church and of Northwest Medical Teams. She has volunteered for international disaster aid to Cambodia, Ethiopia, Somalia, Uzbekestan, Jamaica, Honduras, Mexico, Moldova, and the Navajo nation. She was also one of the doctors at the 1994 Olympics in Atlanta. In addition, she is the founder and president of Children's Community Resources, a non-profit organization devoted to helping children in medical need.
Her recreational activities include reading (female authors).
